Dr. Andrew Nish came to Iowa Radiology (then Radiology P.C.) in 1991 as the group’s first interventional radiologist. Born and raised in Elgin, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago, he went on to earn an B.A. from Carleton College in Minnesota and an M.D. at the Chicago Medical School, followed by his residency and fellowship in interventional radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
While at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Nish met Dr. P.C. Shetty, who was then head of the hospital’s interventional radiology department. Dr. Nish admired Dr. Shetty’s dedication and the fact that he instilled in all of his students a sense that each individual case deserves the highest possible level of precision. This value has stuck with Dr. Nish and guided his practice throughout his career.
Andrew Nish says that his favorite thing about his job is the people he works with, including patients, technologists, nurses, and his radiology partners. He loves living in Des Moines both because it’s an ideal size and because the community enjoys a very high level of medical care. In addition to his position with Iowa Radiology, Dr. Nish serves as medical director for the John Stoddard Cancer Center at UnityPoint Health in Des Moines.
Over the years, Dr. Nish has developed a keen interest in and in-depth knowledge about the role of nutrition and physical activity in health. He finds the prevalence of a wide range of potentially preventable chronic diseases to be particularly frustrating and would very much like to see greater focus on primary prevention in the form of emphasizing the vital importance of healthy lifestyle choices.
Dr. Nish leads a lifestyle that is consistent with his convictions. He is an avid lover of the outdoors who enjoys biking, hiking, and mountain climbing with his son. He also practices yoga daily and loves to read. He and his wife of 33 years, Barb, raised two children together. Charley, 29, works as an outdoor educator in northwest Montana, and Rachel, 25, teaches preschool in San Francisco.
