Iowa Radiology has advanced its commitment to the women of central Iowa by providing the superior diagnostics of digital mammography. Less than 10 percent of women’s imaging centers nationwide have digital mammography.
What is Digital Mammography?
Digital mammography uses a computer, rather than x-ray film, to record x-ray images of the breast. The images are captured and stored digitally, instead of on film, allowing radiologists to manipulate the images. The images become a more versatile diagnostic tool and can then be enlarged or highlighted.
For women age 40 and over, an annual mammogram is the most important way to detect breast cancer in the earliest stages. Annual mammograms are usually covered by medical insurance and do not require a doctor’s referral. Call us at (515) 226-9810 for an appointment.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a prospective study to assess the usefulness of digital mammography to avoid limitations of film mammography in women. The diagnostic accuracy of digital mammograms is the same overall compared to film mammography, but is more accurate in the subset of women described below:
